Former Indian hitter Yuvraj Singh chastised Team Pakistan on Thursday for not playing with strategy against the USA, after the Babar Azam-led team lost horribly to the T20 World Cup newcomers. When Pakistan batted first, they amassed 159/7 in 20 overs and then held the USA to that total, forcing the game into the Super Over. But Pakistan was unable to reach the objective of 19 runs in six balls, and the United States made history by defeating the 2009 champions, a team they had never played before.
Yuvraj questioned Pakistan's approach of not putting batsman Fakhar Zaman to the strike during the Super Over on X (previously Twitter).
"I fail to see why @FakharZamanLive didn't strike out at a lefty seamer when it is more easily penetrated by a left-hander by the angle that the bowler is attempting to create," Yuvraj commented on X.
The 2007 World Cup winner also praised Team USA for their historic victory and said Pakistan will need to win their upcoming match against India, their bitter rivals.
"Nevertheless, we must commend #TeamUSA @usacricket, especially the captain Monank Patel, for his poised decision-making under duress. Pakistan must now defeat India, and they must improve their batting and fielding," Yuvraj wrote.
After the defeat, Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam, did not hold back when he said that his team did not take advantage of the powerplay.
"In our first six overs at bat, we failed to capitalize. Taking consecutive wickets puts you on the back foot, it's up to you as a batter to take initiative and form alliances. Throughout the first six overs with the ball, we fell short of expectations. These things hurt us, as our spinners failed to capture wickets in the middle overs as well," Babar said following the defeat.
In their second T20 World Cup 2024, Group A match, Babar Azam and Co. will take on Team India on Sunday in New York.
Speaking about India, the team captained by Rohit Sharma got off to a decisive eight-wicket victory over Ireland to begin the tournament.
