Families holding hostages warn Netanyahu might "torpedo" the cease-fire agreement and urge Israelis to support it.
According to a senior source, Biden's Israeli proposal would allow Israel to accomplish its stated war objectives.
A senior Israeli source adopts a more optimistic tone and informs Hebrew media that the Israeli proposal put forth by President Biden last night does, in fact, provide for the achievement of those goals, hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in an English statement that the idea of Israel ending the war without all of its declared goals achieved was a "non-starter."
"Israel's conditions for ending the conflict have not changed: To eliminate Hamas’s military and governance capabilities, to liberate all the captives, and to assure that Gaza will not constitute a threat to Israel,” the unnamed source is reported as saying by Channel 13 news. Israel can require that all of these objectives be met before a lasting truce is established thanks to the framework for the hostage-freeing enters into effect.
According to additional reports from Channel 13, Netanyahu did, in fact, permit Israel's negotiating team to discuss a "prolonged ceasefire" in their indirect talks for a deal with Hamas ten days ago, and Biden's speech partially amounted to the "outing" of the Israeli proposal that the war cabinet had approved a few days prior.
It also claims that parts of Israel's stance have not been published recently due to military censorship.
Recent days and weeks have seen reports claiming that almost all of the war cabinet, including the various security chiefs, observer ministers Ron Dermer and Gadi Eisenkott, and ministers Yoav Gallant and Benny Gantz, supported the proposal drafted by the negotiating team last month. Netanyahu, on the other hand, had initially objected to the language on a ceasefire, grudgingly approved of it.
The White House reportedly gave the PMO and Ambassador Mike Herzog some details about two or three hours before Biden spoke, according to Channel 12, while Channel 13 claims that some PMO members were upset that Israel was not provided with a substantive update. These differing accounts of the White House's notification of the PMO's knowledge of the president's speech are presented by a number of Hebrew media outlets tonight.
According to a senior Israeli source cited by Channel 12 News, the Biden administration has effectively "torn up all the cards" by outlining the specifics of the Israeli proposal and pressuring Israel's leadership to adopt a firm position. According to the source, the US has effectively told Israel that "if you say no, you'll take the fallout. What the US decides to do or how Hamas reacts won't matter. The game's rules will change as a result of this speech.
